Labrador Retriever at the exhibition
It is gratifying to see that, with the growing popularity of labradors in our country, the main emphasis in civilized breeding is on genetically meaningful procreation from pedigree producers with a stable psyche and excellent physical data. Therefore, a special role for obtaining high performance at the exhibition among the Labradors with equal exterior stats belongs to , because often dogs lose to others only because of the art of display.
It is great that professional handlers are involved in many dogs. But still I would like to dwell on what the owner should know and be able to do, exposing his pet at cynological exhibitions of any rank and level on his own.
Handling is a responsible job requiring complete dedication, both from the dog and from the handler. A work that has absorbed not only 10-20 minutes while you are in the ring, but also all the time that you spent on creating a real exhibition, working dog.
It is in these minutes that you must reveal all the best qualities, all the positive that is genetically embedded in your Labrador. All that you have invested in the upbringing and training (by no means training) of your Labrador, starting from 3 months of age, such as: impeccable execution of commands, independent arrangement in a natural stance – all this is necessary both in everyday life and in enchanting action called “dog show”.
An exhibition is a colorful performance, and if you have expressed a desire to participate in it, then it does not make sense from the first of all the actors to choose the role of an extras, a coat rack or a garden stuffed animal. The performance is so good that you can follow the classical production, or you can add something of your own, your own flavor, your own improvisation to what is happening. So create a performance, improvise, but to the extent of real necessity.
From the first step, as soon as you cross the line, take your place in accordance with the order of increasing exponential numbers, follow all the actions of an expert director. Sometimes the first glance cast by him on your dog determines the general impression, the result.
Keep in mind that in nature there is no perfect dog that matches every letter of the standard, and therefore any dog has some kind of flaws. Your task in the ring is to gloss over, hide these defects of the exterior, not stick them out, if possible, but, on the contrary, present it, try to draw the expert’s attention to the positive aspects that exist in the dog’s exterior when it is either in the stand or in motion .
The expert should see your labrador in the ring in a natural stance in the following position:
– a highly raised head, a clever, interested look, wary ears, a kind of frowned forehead, internal tension, which directly comes from the dog;
– straight, strictly parallel forelegs, standing perpendicular to the ground (the disadvantage is widely spaced, as well as a narrow set);
– trunk: the top line is straight, runs in a straight line from the withers to the tip of the tail; a slightly raised tail is allowed, that is, a “cheerful tail”, but in no case should the tail be bent to the back with a sickle;
– the hind limbs are set back and spaced slightly wider than the forelimbs, the metatarsals are perpendicular to the ground.
Throughout the examination by an expert, the dog must be kept in a state of “euphoria”, excitement (call it what you want). The distinctive character of the Labrador is his inherent temperament. It is at this point that we must pay special attention. In no case should the dog stand in the ring with his head bowed, ears drooping, tail pinned between the legs, hind legs not sufficiently set back.
The owner must put the dog on the left side to the expert, and stand on his right side himself. Make sure that you do not block the dog during any movements of the expert. The ring should be kept in the left hand in a free state.
Labrador looks very impressive when the handler is standing in front of the dog. To do this, it is necessary to hold the ring in the left hand, without pulling, and in the right, imperceptibly attracting the attention of the dog, a piece of the treat.
If during the inspection the dog has budged, or has changed the location of the limbs, then with the help of the ring put in the correct rack.
With the procedure of showing the teeth usually begins the examination in any ring. The teeth are usually examined by an expert, but he may be asked to do this handler. Keep in mind that if during the examination the dog allows himself to growl at least a little on the handler, and even more so on the expert, or makes an attempt to bite the expert, then he is removed from the ring (is disqualified), because the retriever’s spite for people is a vice.
When the expert starts examining the dog’s teeth – give the command “teeth”, and after the show – “good”. Carefully keep the dog in place.
