Labrador

Its wonderful character and comfortable appearance attract adults and children. His hunting abilities are fascinating. This dog succeeds! Including success with the general public. But beware of fakes.

Labrador – the most popular dog in Europe, the dog of kings and presidents, stars and ordinary employees, blind and disabled people, police and rescuers. Although we all love to list celebrities who have Labradors (and the list is very impressive: the Queen of England and the American President, Charles Aznavour, Nikolai Karachentsev, …) honestly, the best owner for a Labrador is an ordinary representative of the middle class, moderately cheerful, quite sociable, not necessarily sporty – just an ordinary person. Because the Labrador is unpretentious in food, does not require special hair care, does not need particularly long walks – he is glad to just live your life next to you, walking as long as it is good for your health, and if there is an opportunity to walk with children, then joyfully takes part in their games. But isolated from society, in the role of a prestigious home decoration, he will yearn. So, I don’t know a dog more unhappy than a Labrador male presented to Brezhnev, which no one needed. And the French say that among the Labradors – almost indispensable companions of the French presidents, one yearned in the Champs Elysees so much that he escaped there, despite the guards, and was never found, after which his breeder vowed not to sell puppies from his kennel to the presidents anymore. And even if you are not going to become president in the near future, before you start a Labrador – think about it – if the dog remains in the house for 6 or more hours, then the Labrador is not your dog.

Fifty-five centimeters at the withers (on average), about thirty kilograms of weight, a deep and wide chest, a powerful neck, a wide strong back … Labrador is a strong guy, but a strong guy elegant. From the very beginning, the breed was bred for work and retained the physical form necessary for this. The labrador’s anatomy corresponds to its purpose: powerful jaws designed for game fitting, short, dense coat with thick undercoat that protects from the cold and almost waterproof – even if the dog gets dirty, then after the coat dries, all the dirt “rolls” from it, webbed feet and otter tail, facilitating movement in the water. The Labrador has rounded ribs (even a puppy), but he himself must be compact and, preferably, without excess weight. Often veterinarians unfamiliar with the specifics of the breed prescribe a lightweight diet where it is absolutely unnecessary. However, if the Labrador has excess weight, then this is from the wrong lifestyle. For the urban labrador, the “sofa – pavement – sofa” mode is typical, but not useful. Nevertheless, it’s better to add a little daily physical activity and continue to give the usual diet: if it is dry food, then a little less – but in no case more than the manufacturer suggests, if it is natural products – then no more than 600 grams of meat, rice and vegetables. And remember – the only drawback of a Labrador is that he loves to eat!

The most popular theory of the origin of the breed is the export of indigenous dogs from the Labrador Peninsula in northern Canada to England. And although there are many other versions – for example, about the origin of Labradors from a Portuguese water dog, the most important thing for Labradors happened one way or another – at the beginning of the 19th century they ended up in England, where they began to breed them like dogs of the English aristocracy. Today it is very difficult to imagine, but to those who stood at the origins of the breed, the Labrador was seen as something like a Russian canine greyhound – a dog for a narrow circle of the hunting elite. However, the charm and versatility of the Labrador is so great that, carefreely crossing all the barriers – estate and geographical, he found himself in Europe and America – the most popular pet and working dog, who mastered dozens of specialties: from the mayor of a provincial American town (it was so great the popularity of this dog) to a nurse with children with cerebral palsy (a specially trained dog executes up to 200 commands – gives a fallen thing, turns on and off the light, closes the door). But all these professions are peaceful. Neither a bodyguard nor a guard dog can be a normal Labrador. However, unfortunately, for 20 years of breeding in Russia on poor-quality breeding material, the Labrador lost not only external data, but also mental poise, which is why in 96 the breeding of Labradors began almost anew. Now everyone who understands at least some Labradors is trying to breed on an “absorbing cross”, i.e. trying to ensure that imported dogs prevail in the pedigree, which are tested for dysplasia and in the eyes themselves and have ancestors verified by these parameters.

Labrador is a good-natured healthy man in whom everything is harmoniously and interconnected – appearance, health and psyche.
